In the grass. In a bush. To the moon.
In the heat of the afternoon.
Insects have been creating music throughout their lives heroic,
Since before dinosaurs appeared in the Mesozoic.
Crickets first learnt that by vigorously rubbing their wings
They can use them like violin strings.
By inventing stridulation as a craft,
They brought music to the world of art.
Crickets and grasshoppers wings chirp noisily
Yet, louder still play cicadas, theatrically.
Busy bumblebees hum a melody along
Creating nature's unique and only song.
The grasses sway to this sweet tune
with the lightest whisper of a dune.
The trees join in with a loud shiver of twigs and leaves
Waltzing around their trunks on a light breeze.
Migrating locust, feared as they can form a swarm and bring a plague,
Create music with their hind legs.
Katydids are famous for their chirps and ticks,
Whilst beetles make knocks, squeals and clicks.
Termites accompany them with a dry rattle like a snake.
Mosquitos and flies buzz quietly by the lake,
Where damselflies as delicate as real fairies,
Dance along to this music from fairytales.
