Winter Solstice

On the night of winter solstice, people say,
Wassailers go door to door merrymaking,
Scattering spirits and driving demons away
To ensure future good harvest and spell breaking.

The halls are decked with branches of green;
Candles are lit to ward off evil ghosts,
Everyone's ready to let the lord of misrule in
To celebrate the rebirth of the Sun.

Nowadays, families gather round the Yule log
Eating fruitcakes, nuts and cinnamon bow
Playing games and laughing loud amongst the talk
As all the fighting ends under a mistletoe.

Pray, tell me little girls and boys,
What traditions do you treasure?
Making sweet decoration toys,
Crackers or wreaths of holly at leisure?
