A real fairy

Lila dreamt of being a fairy. There was nothing in the whole world she wanted more. She was an active and determined little girl and when she made up her mind nothing would stop her from achieving it. Her mummy tried to explain that fairies only lived in fairy tales but Lila would have none of it and she practised being a fairy every day, dressing up in fancy clothes and waving her magic wand in front of a mirror. She made thousand and one dresses on her way to becoming a fairy. The girl even made a pair of beautiful wings matching her more and more elaborate dresses. At last, she looked in the mirror and smiled with satisfaction. Her happiness didn't last long though as she quickly realised with a thrown that something was missing. She looked like a fairy, but she could not fly like one. At first, she was sad. Then, anger replaced sadness, that with so much time and effort she was still just a girl dressed as a fairy. Lila spent a bad afternoon that day being angry at everything and everyone and she could not control herself. She was so impossible that her parents punished her and she went to bed in a sour mood.

When Lila woke up the next morning, she was smiling again. She had a beautiful dream full of magic, in which she was a real fairy who could fly. The girl realised it must be possible and started thinking about a solution. She dressed quickly, went downstairs and had breakfast with her family. Lila apologised for her behaviour the previous day and asked her parents how she could learn to fly. Her mum first gave her a strange look, but then started considering the question.
- Well, - said Lila's mummy - people cannot fly like birds, bees or bats, but we can fly a plane, a helicopter or paraglide. Some even like to jump with a parachute, however, that's too dangerous for a little girl. Also, it takes time to learn.
- That's fine. I have time, - responded enthusiastically Lila - I'm determined and I don't give up easily.
- Yes, I've noticed - commented the girl's mother with a smile - I have a better idea. I'll take you somewhere special this afternoon and if you like it, you may try it.
- What is it? - asked the girl with wide-open curious eyes - Please tell me.
- Better still, I'll show you today after school.
- Okay, mum, although I cannot wait.
Lila hardly paid attention at school that day. She was so excited and curious. At last, the school pick up time came and Lila ran out to greet her mum. They drove together in silence and pulled up in front of a dance studio. Lila looked at her mum with a surprise but also with disappointment. She expected she would be flying that afternoon.

They both entered the ballet school. Mother and daughter were allowed to watch the lesson and at some point Lila was invited by the teacher to give dancing a try if she wanted to. Lila just smiled with a nod and a spark in her eye, then rushed to change in the sport clothes her mum had ready for her. And then, she danced and danced, as if she was moving above the ground lifted by the spirit of ballet. The first lessons were a bit clumsy but she never gave up on herself. Lila remembered her dream every day. She even made a colourful poster listing her goals which proudly hung in her room. At the end of that school year, Lila took part in a final show at the ballet school. Her mum recorded the spectacle for her. Only when they watched it together, did Lila realise that her dream had already become reality. She looked like a real fairy, she could fly and make dreams come true. And what was her ultimate goal, turned out to be only the beginning of her dream life. Lila happily continued with ballet classes in the following years. Now, she is a prima ballerina dancing in a famous St. Petersburg's ballet theatre, being a fairy not only for herself but the world.
